How we got started

Top Shelf Dubia started out as just a project in Mac's closet in 2022. He had done the research to learn that Dubia's are WAY better than crickets and wanted to make that Ryu and Billy Ray's staple bug but without the high cost. Anthony found out Mac had this project going on and wanted to help out to feed his own lizards. We discovered that there was not a sustainable source of these bugs in the area big enough to support us unless we grew bigger. So we got more bugs and we grew. We also started to wonder, what if we tried to do this for everyone?

Thus, the idea of Top Shelf Dubia was born. We want to make Dubia Roaches easily available for everyone in the Dallas and Fort Worth area. We also want to be able to provide a lot of Dubia Roaches, fast and easy. Here at Top Shelf Dubia, we want to help eliminate the hassles of far drives or waiting for shipping. We want to become the premier provider of Dubia Roaches to the Dallas Fort Worth area and hopefully one day all of Texas! Why Dubia Roaches?

Some of you are seeing this and maybe you don't have Dubia Roaches in your store or home yet. Maybe you still need some convincing. If you do here are several reasons why you should have Dubia Roaches.

Crickets stink!

Crickets have a much shorter life expectancy than roaches and die off much more easily. When they die, their bodies rot and give off a foul odor. Roaches are much more durable and last much longer than crickets and do not have an odor when they die. Do you really want stinky food?

Crickets jump!

If you are going to handle reptiles outside of snakes, let's face it, you are going to handle bugs. The idea of handling roaches may seem daunting, but Dubia Roaches are harmless! Dubia roaches can't fly and don’t bite, making them very easy to handle. Crickets jump around making them difficult to collect at times and prone to escaping. Why not use a food that you don’t have to struggle with running away from you?

Crickets are Noisy!

Crickets chirp loud at night, while roaches make no noise. This is pretty self-explanatory.

Crickets carry disease!

To back up a little bit and remember that crickets bite and roaches don’t. Couple this with the fact that crickets carry things like pin worms and parasites while Dubia Roaches will die off. Why not go with a less riskier option of food?

Crickets have inferior nutritional value!

If the above reasons haven’t convinced you maybe the nutritional facts will convince you. Roaches are a larger and “meatier” insect and will be much more filling to your reptile. The nutrients provided can be broken down easier and roaches are better than crickets across the board. They have a lower fiber content, making them much more digestible. Their more balanced mineral content makes them a much more balanced “full-time” feeder than crickets. While a variety of insects and greens should be provided, dubia roaches are a much better staple than crickets.
